Books written in the unique Griqua language

There are two writers who have written books in the traditional Griqua language as spoken at Griquatown today. Their publications purchased from the Mary Moffat Museum in Griquatown can be overviewed below.

Afrikaanse Kloek-Goed
- Hetta Hager

Hetta Hager has been the curator of the Mary Moffat Museum at Griquatown for 14 years (as of 2006) and has become well versed with the unique Griqua derivation of Afrikaans which includes many of the words that originated from the times of Jan van Riebeeck.

(Note: Scott Balson met Hetta when he travelled to Griquatown in September 2006 to present a copy of his pre-release book "Children of the Mist" to the Mary Moffat Museum. More on the presentation at this link).

This A5 sized 50 page soft covered book is her first in providing stories in the uniquely Griqua language. 

The books are only sold at the Mary Moffat Museum and very few have been issued.

A very valuable find.

A copy in perfect condition signed by Hetta Hager is in the Balson Holdings Family Trust collection.


Kloek-Goed Twee

Adam Kloek-Goed

This A4sized 76 page  ring bound soft covered book is the only play ever written in the uniquely Griqua language. 

The books are only sold at the Mary Moffat Museum and very few have been issued.

Two copies in perfect condition - signed by Hetta Hager is in the Balson Holdings Family Trust collection. There is also a with a separate appendix providing an explanation on the Griqua words used.


Die Behae van God

Donald Riekert has become well versed with the unique Griqua derivation of Afrikaans which includes many of the words that originated from the times of Jan van Riebeeck. He specialises in short poems - covering a wide range of subjects.

In this 35 page A5 sized book the poems include "Verweer", "Winter" and "Grondhoop".. 

The books are only sold at the Mary Moffat Museum and very few have been issued.
