With the article on South Africa's first indigenous coinage, the currency tokens of Strachan and Co, now appearing in Australasian Coin & Banknote Magazine we have decided to make one of these extremely rare sets of sixteen tokens available to just one lucky collector.
The set, seen right, is one of less than 100 hundred in the world and is for sale.
The Strachan and Co currency tokens were South Africa's first indigeous coinage (launched in 1874) - more at this link.
The prices of these tokens has exploded in recent times from just a few hundred dollars ten years ago to US$3,000 in 2004 when the last set was offered for sale. Take this link for more on prices. Just two months ago the 1/- S&Co, Set One, sold for US$86 on eBay after heavy bidding (16 bids). Take this link to see the eBay auction. That 1/- coin is one of the more common pieces. The MH set (set two) being the rarest with most of the four coins numbering 100 or less. The rarest of the coins, the set three 1/- completes the extreme rarity of this set offered for sale.
The cash price for the
complete set is just Au$4,500 (about US$3,500).
