(Scott Balson, a numismatist, worked in Barclays Bank in Ixopo from late 1976 to 1979 and studied the history of the tokens after learning of their existence. He was given a handful of sets of the tokens by the owner of Strachan and Company, Ken Strachan, at the conclusion of his research. Sadly the tokens counted and categorised in 1977 that remained at the Umzimkulu store were destroyed in the early 1990s after Ken Strachan sold the stores to the South African government following the formation of the Transkeian homeland.)
