The fake ZAR pond used as a gambling token

The token below is a fake brass "pond" which was used in early gambling dens in S Africa. They are easily identified as such.

As you can see the coin berates Paul Kruger and with the words "Imitation Sovereign Kruger" and a styalised Kruger with a prominent nose.

Tokens commemorating the final stand by the Boers
(post 1910 Union)

In 1916 the remnants of the boers and Afrikaaner nation took a last stand against the British Imperialists. Their timing, during the middle of World War One was not accidental - neither was their support for the Germans, despite Jan Christiaan Smuts, the Boer General, taking on the Germans in German East Africa.

The theme of "Kerk, volk en taal" (Church, people and language) dominated in a belated reflection on how 36,000 of an estimated 250,000 Afrikaaners had been killed in the bloody war with the British invaders at the turn of the century (1899-1902).

The small stand was centered around a gathering of boers in two small towns Vrede (meaning "freedom") and Senekal both in the Orange Free State. The two rare medallions shown right reflect the theme of "volk, taal en tradities" (people, language and traditions) and were issued at the Dingaansfeest (Dingaans Festival) at Senekal in 1916 and a gathering of Afrikaaners on the 3rd to 4th February 1916 in the small town of Vrede.
